Course Aim : This programme provides students with education and training to work within the area of Agricultural Mechanisation and Technology. The graduate of this programme will have the skills, knowledge and technical ability to cope effectively with the rapidly changing technologies that is a feature of the farm machinery industry.

Entry Requirements: Applicants must satisfy a minimum entry requirement of a Higher Certificate (Level 6) in a relevant field or an equivalent qualification to a Higher Certificate (Level 6) with appropriate prerequisite subjects.

Modules

Semester 1

Agricultural Tractor Systems and Technology1: This module aims to establish the knowledge, skills and understanding of the more complex aspects of the modern tractor and associated farm machinery. Part of the module is to diagnose complex faults on modern tractors and related farm machinery and to understand new technology as it is introduced.

Control and Diagnostics on Agricultural Tractor and Machines 1: This module introduces the learner to the complex electrics and electronics on farm machines. It involves the development, evaluation and use electrical diagnostic routines and procedures for electrical systems.

Material Selection: This subject aims to improve the learners knowledge and understanding of materials used by engineers. Learners will apply relevant mechanical equations to practical problems, components and case studies.

Applied Mechanical Engineering Mathematics 1: The aim of this module is to provide a detailed and in‑depth understanding of engineering mathematical concepts, which will allow the learner to be able to apply this knowledge to solve practical and relevant mechanical engineering problems.

Fluid Dynamics: Develop the students understanding of fluid power through a grounding in Fluid Mechanics and Dynamics

Group Project: This module involves active learning where learners participate in a work based group project. The group project topic may have industrial links and involves the practical application of research, design, engineering principles, materials analysis and manufacturing. The group project allows for team development where each member has a defined role to play.

 

Semester 2

Agricultural Tractor Systems and Technology: This module aims to establish the necessary knowledge and skills to logically diagnose complex faults on modern tractors and related farm machinery and to understand new technology as it is introduced. Students perform repairs to modern farm tractors and associated farm machinery

Control and Diagnostics on Agricultural Tractor and Machines 2: In this module the aim is to establish and examine the various electrical instrumentation, electronic and microprocessor controlled systems of the modern farm tractor and agricultural machines. Students also perform analysis on electrical components and systems in regards inputs and outputs and solve problems with diagnostic equipment used in the farm machinery area.  Appraise and assess new electrical technology as it is introduced to the industry

Mechanics & Failure Analysis: This module aims to improve the learners knowledge and understanding of materials used by engineers. Learners will apply relevant mechanical equations to practical problems, components and case studies.

Applied Mechanical Engineering Mathematics 2: The aim of this module is to provide a detailed and in‑depth understanding of engineering mathematical concepts, which will allow the learner to be able to apply this knowledge to solve practical and relevant mechanical engineering problems

Hydraulics: Develop the students understanding of fluid power through a grounding in Hydraulics, and enable the student to design, build, test and fault find hydraulic and electro‑hydraulic circuitry

Individual Project: This module aims to develop the learner's ability to apply their technical skills and knowledge to complete an individual technical project.

 

Progression Information

Graduates of the programme can progress to a Level 8 Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering (LIT) or to a Level 8 Bachelor of Engineering in Agricultural Engineering (IT Tralee)

I completed the Higher Certificate in Engineering in Agricultural Mechanisation (Level 6). I found the balance of theory in the morning and practical in the evening excellent. Being able to combine this with getting my green cert was really the selling point for me.

From there I decided to continue my studies by completing this course the Bachelor Degree of Engineering in Agricultural Engineering (Level 7) in 2020. The course contained a wide range of aspects of the industry and looked at the modern system and diagnostic in machinery and tractors. I really enjoyed the trips we went on visiting industry and an operational bio digester plant. I also thoroughly enjoyed doing the group and individual projects. I am currently working with Templetuohy Farm Machinery in Laois as a Trainer Salesman and enjoying every minute of it. I am glad I completed the BEng in Agricultural Engineering.
